Péter Kiss (born 11 June 1959 – died 29 July 2014) was an important Hungarian politician. He was a member of the Socialist Party. Péter Kiss held many different jobs in the Hungarian government. He was known for helping to lead the country during important times.

Péter Kiss's Early Life and Education

Péter Kiss was born in a town called Celldömölk, Hungary. He studied engineering at the Technical University of Budapest and graduated in 1983. After finishing his studies, he became a member of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers. He also joined the Society of Economic Sciences.

Péter Kiss's Political Journey

Péter Kiss started his political career in 1989. He helped create the Left Youth Association and was its first leader. In 1992, he joined the board of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP). He also became a member of the Hungarian Parliament, called the National Assembly. He stayed a Member of Parliament until he passed away.

Ministerial Roles and Responsibilities

Péter Kiss held many important roles as a minister:

  • From 1995 to 1998, he was the Minister of Work.
  • From 2002 to 2003, he served as the Minister of Employment and Work.
  • From 2003 to 2006, he was a chief minister in the Prime Minister's Office. This meant he worked closely with the Prime Minister.
  • From 2006 to 2007, he was the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. This job involved looking after workers' rights and social well-being.
  • From 2007 to 2009, he was again the chief minister.
  • From 2009 to 2010, he was a special minister without a specific department. He helped Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai with various tasks.

Work in Parliament

Even after 2010, Péter Kiss continued his work in the National Assembly. He was part of committees that focused on employment and European affairs. He also helped draft Hungary's new constitution. In 2014, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Újpest.

Péter Kiss's Family Life

Péter Kiss was married to Tímea Petykó. They had a daughter named Diána Dóra.

Péter Kiss's Legacy and Passing

Péter Kiss passed away on 29 July 2014 after a long illness. Many important people remembered him fondly.

  • Former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said Péter Kiss was "a good man, an honest politician, a democrat." He also mentioned that Kiss was good at making peace and finding solutions.
  • Former Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai called him "more than a politician, he was a statesman." He said Kiss helped Hungary get through a difficult time.
  • András Schiffer, another political leader, said Péter Kiss understood the needs of workers in the country.

Péter Kiss was buried in Kerepesi Cemetery on 15 August 2014. Many politicians attended his funeral to pay their respects.
