He is also a teacher, historian, and actor. Pedro Torres helped start the Taíno Indian Movement in Puerto Rico in 1968. He works hard for the Jatibonicu Taíno Tribal Nation of Borikén to be officially recognized.

Learning and Education

Pedro Torres studied many interesting subjects in college. He learned about different cultures in Cultural Anthropology. He also studied Puerto Rican history, Art, and Latin American studies. Torres graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey in June 1977.

Working for Taíno Culture

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Pedro Torres began researching Taíno history. He looked for old Taíno objects and information. He worked with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (CPI) to document these findings.

In the mid-1970s, Torres was an actor in a group called El Grupo Guazabara. He even translated the first play script from Spanish into the Taíno language. In 1993, he started a group called the Taino Inter-Tribal Council (TITC, Inc.). This group helps teach people about Taíno culture.

Torres also worked at places where old things are dug up, called archaeological sites. For over 50 years, he has worked to bring back Taíno objects. These objects belong to the Jatibonicu Taíno tribe. This tribe once lived in the central mountains of Puerto Rico.

Pedro Torres is known as a Taíno revivalist. This means he helps bring back and celebrate Taíno traditions. He is also a civil rights activist. He was one of the first people to start the 1968 Taíno Indian Movement in Puerto Rico. He works to get the government to officially recognize Taíno people. He also wants his Jatibonicu Taíno community in Puerto Rico and New Jersey to be recognized.

As a leader, Torres is involved in his group's decisions. He also takes part in important discussions about Taíno people around the world.

Often called Don Pedro or Chief Guanikeyu, he asked for "Taino national unity" in 1996. This meant all Taíno people should work together. In 2000, he spoke for the Jatibonicu Taino Tribal Nation to the U.S. Census Bureau. He has written many articles about Taíno culture and history. These writings cover Taínos in Puerto Rico, Florida, and nearby areas.

Helping the Taíno Language

Pedro Torres also taught the Taíno language and studied it. As a leader, he performed the traditional Taíno Guatiao. This is a special naming ceremony. He has given Taíno names to many people who identify as Taíno today.

He also helped promote the Taíno language in a unique way. In 2000, he was chosen to name a crater on the planet Venus. He named it Nanichi, which means "My Love" or "My Heart."

A Leader's Journey

In 2001, Pedro Guanikeyu Torres stepped down from being the direct leader of the Jatibonicu Taino Tribal Nation. He did this because of health reasons. He then took on a new role as a "tribal elder." In this role, he continues to share his wisdom and guide his community.
