Hymenoxys richardsonii is a type of plant often called pingue hymenoxys or pingue rubberweed. It belongs to the sunflower family, which is a very large group of flowering plants. This plant grows naturally across a wide area in western United States and western Canada. You can find it from Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas all the way north to Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Varieties of Pingue Hymenoxys
Sometimes, a plant species can have slightly different forms. These are called varieties. Hymenoxys richardsonii has two main varieties:
- Hymenoxys richardsonii var. floribunda: This variety grows in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah.
- Hymenoxys richardsonii var. richardsonii: This variety is found in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
Traditional Uses of the Plant
For many years, different plants have been used for their helpful properties. The Zuni people, who are a Native American tribe from New Mexico, have traditionally used Hymenoxys richardsonii.
Plant Remedies
They would prepare the plant in special ways to help with certain health issues:
- They made a poultice by chewing the plant's root. A poultice is like a soft, moist paste that is put on the skin. They used this poultice on sores and rashes.
- They also made an infusion from the root. An infusion is like a tea made by soaking the plant in hot water. This drink was used to help with stomachaches.
