Raymond Bessone OBE (born Raimondo Pietro Carlo Bessone; 11 May 1911 – 17 April 1992) was a famous British hairdresser. He was known by many names, including Mr Teasy-Weasy and Teasie Weasie Raymond. Raymond was a top hairdresser from the 1930s to the 1960s. He became famous for his unique styles and fun personality.

Raymond Bessone's Early Life and Career

Raymond Bessone was born Raimondo Pietro Carlo Bessone in London, England. His family was from Italy and France. He later changed his name to Peter Carlo Bessone Raymond.

Raymond started his career helping in his father's barber shop. He made fake beards and moustaches. Later, he opened his own fancy hair salon in Mayfair, London. A very famous hairdresser named Vidal Sassoon even trained there! Raymond's salons became very popular in London's West End. He also opened salons in other big cities like Birmingham.

Raymond was the first hairdresser to appear on television. He even had his own show on Saturday afternoons! People called him Britain's first "celebrity hairdresser." He spoke with a playful French accent and had a very grand way of acting. He loved to walk around his salon. If a customer bothered him, he might say, "Madam, can you not see that I am meditating!" His salon in Knightsbridge was super fancy, with shiny mirrors, sparkling chandeliers, and even champagne fountains.

In 1956, a famous actress named Diana Dors flew Raymond all the way to the United States. She wanted him to wash and style her hair! This trip cost £2,500, which was a lot of money back then. People talked a lot about it because you could buy a house for that much!

In 1957, Raymond created a new hairstyle called the Shangri-La. He said it was based on "colour, line, youth, and softness." He got the idea after a skiing accident in Switzerland. He made a brief appearance in the TV show Crossroads in the early 1970s.

Raymond Bessone's Hairstyling Ideas

Raymond had strong ideas about hair. He thought that most women should not have very long hair because he believed it made them look older. He also thought that a middle hair parting was not good unless someone had perfect facial features.

Many people believe that Raymond Bessone invented the modern bouffant hairstyle. This is a style where the hair is puffed up around the head. He also liked to dye hair with bright, bold colours. These included pink, orange, and even purple!

Raymond Bessone and Horse Racing

Raymond Bessone also loved horse racing. He was part-owner of two horses that won the famous Grand National race.

One of his horses was named Ayala. Ayala won the Grand National in 1963. Another horse he partly owned was Rag Trade. Rag Trade won the Grand National in 1976. Raymond had bought Rag Trade himself for a lot of money. His racing colours, which are the special colours worn by jockeys, were ice blue and wine.

Raymond Bessone's Family Life

Raymond Bessone was married to an actress named Rosalie Ashley. They had three daughters together.

Raymond received an award called the OBE in 1982. This award was for his great work in hairdressing. He passed away in Berkshire on 17 April 1992, when he was 80 years old.
