Seth Ruda Ladha Chawra was born in 1884 in a village called Madhapar, near Bhuj. This area was part of the Princely State of Cutch back then. His family, the Mestri community, was well-known for their amazing building skills.

Ruda Ladha's father, Ladha Bharmal, and his uncle, Ramji Bharmal, were also railway contractors. They worked on building railway lines in places like Itarsi and Jabalpur in the late 1800s. Ruda Ladha went to primary school in Madhapar and Bhuj.

Building Railways Across India

Ruda Ladha joined his father's railway business when he was very young. He quickly became famous as a skilled railway contractor for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway.

Key Railway Projects

  • He helped lay the railway line from Pandhurna to Itarsi around 1922.
  • He worked on many other railway bridges and lines.
  • He also worked with another famous businessman, Walchand Hirachand. They were good friends.
  • Walchand Hirachand even asked Ruda Ladha to be a partner in his new company, Hindustan Construction Company, in 1926. But Ruda Ladha politely said no.
  • Ruda Ladha and other contractors helped build the Bhor Ghat tunnels. This was a big project for the G.I.P. Railway between 1926 and 1928.

Becoming a Factory Owner

Around 1915, Ruda Ladha settled in a small village called Bagra in what is now Madhya Pradesh. He was one of the first people to start making roof tiles there.

  • Factories started by him and his family, like Ruda Ladha & Sons and Trisul Tile Works, were leaders in the Indian tile market for about 70 years.
  • The special "Manglore pattern tiles" became known as "Bagra Tiles" because so many of them were made in Bagra. This put the small village of Bagra on India's industrial map.
  • However, in the 1980s, new government rules about protecting the environment made it harder to get the yellow clay needed for the tiles. This caused the industry to decline.
