Safranal facts for kids
Safranal is a special natural chemical found in saffron. Saffron is a famous spice that comes from the beautiful purple crocus flower (Crocus sativus). Safranal is the main reason saffron has its unique and wonderful smell.
Scientists believe that safranal is made from another natural substance called zeaxanthin. This happens through a process where zeaxanthin changes into something else first, and then into safranal.

How Safranal Affects the Body
Safranal has some interesting effects on living things.
Helping with Seizures
In studies with animals, safranal has been shown to help stop seizures. It works by interacting with certain parts of the brain called GABAA receptors.
Protecting Cells
Safranal is also a strong antioxidant. This means it helps protect your body's cells from damage caused by harmful things called "free radicals." Think of antioxidants like tiny shields for your cells!
Fighting Cancer Cells
In lab tests, safranal has shown it can harm cancer cells. It does this by stopping tiny parts inside cells, called microtubules, from forming correctly. This can help slow down or stop cancer growth.
Boosting Mood
Studies in animals and early tests in humans suggest that safranal might also help with feelings of sadness or depression. It could have properties that help improve mood.
Where Safranal Comes From
Safranal is found naturally in many different plants and even some tiny living things. Here are some of its natural sources:
- Microcystis (a type of tiny water plant called cyanobacterium)
- Aspalathus linearis (Rooibos tea plant)
- Camellia sinensis (Tea leaf)
- Crocus sativus (Saffron flower)
- Ficus carica (Fig leaf)
- Lycium chinense (Wolfberry, also known as goji berry)
- Cuminum cyminum (Cumin Seed)
- Centaurea sibthorpii (a type of knapweed flower)
- Centaurea amanicola (another type of knapweed flower)
- Centaurea consanguinea (yet another type of knapweed flower)
- Erodium cicutarium (a common wild plant often called stork's-bill)
- Calycopteris floribunda (a plant from India called Ukshi)
- Sambucus nigra (elderberry plant)
- Citrus limon (lemon fruit)
- Achillea distans (a type of yarrow plant)
