Santiago is a special area called a district in Costa Rica. It's also the main city of the Puriscal area, which is part of the San José province.

History of Santiago
A long time ago, a priest named Father Juan Cortez de Paja built the old cathedral in Santiago. Sadly, an Indian Princess passed away from a sickness she caught. Many years later, exactly 100 years after her death, a big earthquake shook the area. This powerful earthquake destroyed the beautiful cathedral.
Geography of Santiago
Santiago covers an area of about 34.52 square kilometers (13.33 square miles). It sits at an elevation of 1105 meters (3,625 feet) above sea level. The district is located in the coastal mountain range of Costa Rica.
It is about 42 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of San José, which is the capital city of Costa Rica. Santiago is also about 77 kilometers (48 miles) north of the city of Parrita, which is located on the Pacific coast.
