History of Shevlin
Shevlin started as a place where people cut down trees, called a logging camp. This was in the late 1800s. The city got its name from Thomas H. Shevlin, who was a very important person in the lumber business.
Shevlin is in Clearwater County. This county used to be part of Beltrami County. Shevlin tried to become the main town for the new county, but another town called Bagley won.
Shevlin used to be a busy place with many shops. There were places like blacksmiths, saloons, hotels, and stables. Sadly, big fires in 1904 and 1911 destroyed most of these buildings.
Over the years, many different businesses were in Shevlin. These included a creamery for dairy products, a meat locker, a sawmill, and a gas station. There were also stores that sold general goods, hardware, and medicines. People could find restaurants, a newspaper, a hat shop, barbershops, and doctors' offices.
Shevlin Today
The Shevlin School, which was built in 1911, closed in 1991. After it closed, students started taking buses to Bagley for school. Today, the old school building is a history museum.
Shevlin now has two churches and two bars. There are also mini storage units and many small businesses run from people's homes.
