The sooty ringlet (Erebia pluto) is a type of butterfly. It belongs to a group of butterflies called the Satyrinae subfamily, which is part of the Nymphalidae family. This butterfly lives in high mountains, like the Alps and Apennine Mountains.

You can find the sooty ringlet at heights between 1,900 and 3,000 meters (about 6,200 to 9,800 feet). It lives in countries such as Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Slovenia.

What Does the Sooty Ringlet Look Like?

The sooty ringlet butterfly has a wingspan of about 32 to 40 millimeters (about 1.2 to 1.6 inches). This is the distance from one wingtip to the other when its wings are spread out.

Sooty Ringlet Life Cycle

Adult sooty ringlet butterflies are usually seen flying from June to August. They have one generation each year. This means that the butterflies lay eggs, which hatch into caterpillars, then turn into pupae, and finally become adult butterflies all within one year.

What Do Sooty Ringlet Caterpillars Eat?

The young caterpillars of the sooty ringlet butterfly mostly eat different types of grass. Their favorite foods include Festuca, Poa annua, and Poa minor.
