What is a Heritage Register?
A heritage register is like a special record book that lists places, buildings, or objects that are important for their history, beauty, or how they show us about the past. When a place is on a heritage register, it means it's protected. This helps make sure these special places are looked after for people to enjoy now and in the future.
How Was the Register Created?
In Queensland, there's a law called the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. This law says that all local councils, which are like the local governments for different areas, must keep their own list of important heritage sites.
The Southern Downs Region was created in 2008 when a few smaller local areas joined together. Because of this, they needed to make a new heritage list for the whole new region.
To do this, they first did a big study about the culture and history of the area. This study finished in 2010. After that, they made a first list of places they thought should be on the register. This list was then shown to the public in 2011 so people could share their thoughts and ideas.
What Places Are on the Register?
The Southern Downs Local Heritage Register includes all the places in the Southern Downs Region that are also on the Queensland Heritage Register. The Queensland Heritage Register is a list of places that are important for the whole state of Queensland.
But the local register also adds more places! It includes other sites that are very important to the local community and its history, even if they are not famous across the whole state. This makes sure that special local spots are also recognized and protected.
