The Story of Mata Nui
This book tells the story of six powerful heroes called Toa. They protect a faraway island named Mata Nui. The island got its name from the Great Spirit Mata Nui, who brought its people there. These people are called Matoran. The Great Spirit Mata Nui taught the Matoran three important rules: Unity, Duty, and Destiny.
Mata Nui had a brother named Makuta. Makuta grew jealous of Mata Nui. He used his magic to put Mata Nui into a deep sleep. Makuta, known as the Master of Shadows, spread evil across the island. He caused fear and chaos. He even turned some of the island's creatures evil.
The six Toa were sent to the island in large containers. Their mission was to rescue the Matoran. They also needed to free the Great Spirit Mata Nui. Each Toa had special powers and skills. When they arrived, they didn't remember much. They found their assigned villages. There, they learned their first big task. They had to find the Great Kanohi Masks of Power. Each Toa needed all six masks. They already had one, so they had five more to find. These powerful masks were hidden all over Mata Nui island.
The Toa fought many of Makuta's monsters. Eventually, they found all their Great Masks. They traveled to Kini-Nui, which is where the Great Temple is located. At the temple, they each received special golden masks. They used these masks in the final battle of this adventure. They fought against strong creatures called Manas.
To beat the Manas, all six Toa had to combine their powers. They formed into two super-beings called Toa Kaita. After stopping the Manas, they changed back into their original six forms. Then, they faced Makuta's next challenge: the Shadow Toa. The Shadow Toa were evil copies of the real Toa. They almost defeated the heroes. The Toa only won when they switched opponents. Each Toa fought a different dark copy.
Who Lives on Mata Nui?
The Matoran People
The Matoran are the regular people who live on Mata Nui. They don't have special powers like the Toa. They live in six different villages. Each village represents one of the six elements.
- Ta-Koro: Fire village
- Le-Koro: Air village
- Ga-Koro: Water village
- Onu-Koro: Earth village
- Po-Koro: Stone village
- Ko-Koro: Ice village
Each group of Matoran has a leader called a Turaga. The Turaga are wise elders. Each village also has its own Toa protector. Matoran is also the name of the written language used in their world.
The Toa Heroes
The Toa are the brave heroes of Mata Nui. They were sent to save the Matoran from Makuta's evil. Toa are tall and wear special Kanohi masks. These masks give them unique abilities. Each Toa also has power over an element. To defeat Makuta, each Toa must find their own set of all six Great Masks.
- Tahu: He is the Toa of Fire. He uses a Fire Sword. His Great Kanohi Mask is called Hau. It gives him the power of shielding.
- Lewa: He is the Toa of Air. He uses an Air Axe. His Great Kanohi Mask is called Miru. It gives him the power of levitation (floating).
- Gali: She is the Toa of Water. She uses her Water Hooks. Her Great Kanohi Mask is called Kaukau. It lets her breathe underwater.
- Onua: He is the Toa of Earth. He uses his Earth Claws. His Great Kanohi Mask is called Pakari. It gives him super strength.
- Pohatu: He is the Toa of Stone. He uses 'Feet Additions'. These are powerful tools on his feet. They are strong enough to break rocks with a single kick. His Great Kanohi Mask is called Kakama. It gives him super speed.
- Kopaka: He is the Toa of Ice. He uses an Ice Sword and an Ice Shield. His Great Kanohi Mask is called Akaku. It gives him x-ray vision.
The six Toa are strongest when they work together. But they only team up when there's a really big problem. They usually prefer to stay in their own parts of the island.
The Turaga Leaders
The Turaga are the leaders of the Matoran. They also give advice to the Toa. When the Toa first arrive, they don't know much about the island. So, the Turaga are their main teachers and guides.
- Vakama: Turaga of Fire
- Matau: Turaga of Air
- Nokama: Turaga of Water
- Whenua: Turaga of Earth
- Onewa: Turaga of Stone
- Nuju: Turaga of Ice
Rahi Monsters
The Rahi are animal-like monsters that live on Mata Nui island. Like the Matoran, Toa, and Turaga, they also wear masks. But the evil Makuta has infected the masks of some Rahi. This makes them his slaves. Makuta sends many different types of Rahi to attack the Toa in this book.
- Kofo-Jaga: These are large scorpion-like monsters. They have claws and a stinger tail. They usually live in tunnels around Onu-Koro. You can also find them in the deserts near Po-Wahi.
- Tarakava: These are fierce lizard-like creatures that live in the water. They attack by jumping out of the water. They hit their prey with their strong, hammer-like front arms.
- Kane-Ra: This is a huge bull-like beast. It charges with its pointed horns. It also attacks with its large, strong jaws.
- Nui-Jaga: These are bigger and more dangerous relatives of the Kofo-Jaga. Nui-Jaga are more aggressive and stronger. They can shoot venom from their stinger. This venom causes temporary blindness. Their claws are strong enough to crush rocks.
- Manas: These are enormous, violent crab-like monsters. The Manas controlled by Makuta act as his guards. They are the smartest of the Rahi. One Manas can easily overpower a single Toa. They are good swimmers and can live in very hot places. The Toa can only defeat them by working together.
