About The Worry Website
The book tells seven different stories. These stories are about children in Mr. Speed's class. They go to Mapleton Juniors school.
Mr. Speed creates a special website for his class. It's called The Worry Website. The kids can only use it on his classroom computer. This website is a new way for them to talk about their problems. It replaces the old "Circle Time" method.
The book was first planned to have only six stories. One story was even chosen from a fan competition. But the winning story, Lisa's worry, ended sadly. Jacqueline Wilson then decided to write a seventh story. This was to give the book a happier ending. The last story is about a girl named Natasha. She doesn't go to Mapleton Juniors. She attends a special school.
The Children's Worries
Holly's Worry
Holly lives with her dad and her younger sister, Hannah. Hannah is very cute. Holly thinks her sister's teacher, Miss Morgan, might become her stepmother. This is because Miss Morgan is dating Holly's dad.
Holly wants her stepmother to be "wicked." She likes Miss Morgan at first. But when she finds out about the dating, she decides to dislike her. Holly spends more time with Miss Morgan. However, she doesn't give the teacher a chance. Holly acts unfriendly towards Miss Morgan.
One day, while shopping, Miss Morgan tells Holly she's tired of her bad behavior. After this talk, they both become good friends.
Greg's Worry
Greg sits next to Holly in class. The book mentions he is her boyfriend. His specific worry is not detailed in the story.
Claire's Worry
Claire has had bad dreams since she was little. These dreams started after watching certain films. Because of this, her mom is very strict. She controls what Claire watches.
Claire watches a scary film called The Monster. It is rated 18. This means it's for adults. The film is very violent. Claire cannot stop thinking about it. She has nightmares about the monster.
Mr. Speed gives Claire advice. He tells her to use her special skill, football, to fight the nightmares. This helps her. She then dreams about playing football with Mr. Speed. Together, they defeat the monster.
William's Worry
William thinks he is not smart. He struggles with many things. Mr. Speed even gives him a prize for losing a spelling contest.
Later, Mr. Speed shares a story. He tells the class about an eating contest he won in school. It was called the Enormous Mouthful Contest. The children then have their own contest. William surprises everyone by winning it. This shows he has a special talent.
Samantha's Worry
Samantha's dad left her family. He went to live with his new girlfriend. Samantha has been very sad since then. She also feels unpopular at school.
Mr. Speed suggests that Samantha try gardening. She starts to enjoy it. Gardening helps her feel better. It also brings William closer to her. They work well together in the garden.
Lisa's Worry
Lisa is very sad because of difficult problems at home. She finds it hard to deal with her family situation. This is the only story in the book that does not have a clear happy ending for the child's worry.
Lisa decides not to write her real worry on the website. Instead, she writes that she is starting to get spots. However, the last chapter, Natasha's worry, partly continues Lisa's story.
Natasha's Worry
Natasha uses a special voice machine to talk. She is disabled. She really wants to be in the school concert.
Natasha becomes friends with Lisa. Together, they decide to enter the concert. They perform a song called the "worry song." This helps them both.
