The Tridontomidae is a small group of millipedes. You can only find these special creatures in Guatemala, a country in Central America.

These millipedes are usually between 22 mm and 28 mm long. That's about the length of a large paperclip! They are typically grayish in color. One cool thing about them is their legs and antennae. They are much longer and thinner than those of many other millipedes.

What Makes Tridontomidae Special?

This family includes a very interesting species called Aenigmopus alatus. Adult males of this millipede have a very unusual way of reproducing. They are the only known species in their larger group, called Helminthomorpha, to have this unique feature.

Types of Tridontomidae Millipedes

The Tridontomidae family is divided into two main groups, called genera:

  • Aenigmopus (discovered by Loomis & Hoffman in 1962)
  • Tridontomus (also discovered by Loomis & Hoffman in 1962)
