Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ágnes Szendrei is a famous mathematician from both Hungary and America. She studies advanced topics in a part of mathematics called universal algebra. This includes areas like clones and the congruence lattice problem.

Dr. Szendrei is a professor of mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder. She also wrote an important book called Clones in Universal Algebra in 1986. In May 2022, she was chosen as an external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This is a special honor for Hungarian scientists who live outside Hungary but have made amazing discoveries.

Ágnes Szendrei's Education and Career

Ágnes Szendrei earned her first advanced degree, a doctorate, in 1982. She received it from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. A doctorate means she completed a very high level of study in mathematics.

In 1993, she earned a "habilitation." This is like a second, higher doctorate. It is often needed to become a full professor in some European countries. Her 1982 doctorate paper was about "Clones of Linear Operations and Semi-Affine Algebras." Her supervisor for this work was Béla Csákány.

Dr. Szendrei taught at the University of Szeged in Hungary for many years. She was there from 1982 until 2003. After that, she moved to the United States. She then joined the faculty at the University of Colorado.

Awards and Honors

Ágnes Szendrei has received many important awards for her work in mathematics. She is a Humboldt Fellow. This is a special award that helps researchers from around the world.

She won the Kató Rényi Award in 1975 for her research as a college student. In 1978, she received the Géza Grünwald Commemorative Prize. This award is for young researchers from the János Bolyai Mathematical Society. She also won the Golden Ring of the Republic in 1979.

In 1992, Dr. Szendrei won the Paul Erdős Prize. This is a very important award from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Later, in 2000, she won the Academy's Farkas Bolyai Award. These awards show how much her work is valued in the world of mathematics.
