Æthelbert II of Kent facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Æthelbert II (also spelled Æðelberht) was a king who ruled the ancient Kingdom of Kent in England. He was born around 725 and passed away in 762. His father, Wihtred, was also a king of Kent.

When King Wihtred died, his three sons, Æthelbert II, Eadberht I, and Alric, shared the rule of Kent. It seems Æthelbert II lived longer than his brothers. Later, he even ruled alongside his nephew, Eardwulf. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, an old historical record, tells us he died in 762. He also had a son named Eadberht II.

Ruling Kent: A Shared Kingdom

After his father's death, Æthelbert II became king along with his two brothers. This was a way to share power in the kingdom. He continued to rule for many years. He eventually outlived both of his brothers.

Later in his reign, Æthelbert II shared the kingship with his nephew, Eardwulf. This shows that power was sometimes passed down through the family.

Official Documents and Agreements

Even before he became king, Æthelbert II was involved in important royal business. He signed an official document, called a charter, in 724. His father, the king, also witnessed this document.

As king, Æthelbert II issued more charters. These were like official papers or agreements. He also confirmed a charter from his brother, Eadberht I. This means he agreed with his brother's official decisions. He even witnessed a charter for his nephew, Eardwulf. This shows his role in the kingdom's official matters.

Kent and Mercia: A Powerful Neighbor

During the later part of Æthelbert II's rule, the Kingdom of Kent was under the influence of a stronger kingdom called Mercia. This meant Mercia had some control over Kent.

However, even with Mercia's power, Æthelbert II managed to keep his position as king of Kent. He still held the title and responsibilities of a ruler.
