About Óscar Alzaga
Early Life and Education
Óscar Alzaga was born in Madrid, Spain, on May 29, 1942. He studied law at the University of Madrid, finishing in 1964. Later, he earned a higher degree (a PhD) from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1972.
Political Career and Contributions
In 1969, Alzaga began his career as a professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid. During the time of Francoist Spain, he was part of a group called Tácito. This group was a tolerated opposition movement, meaning they were allowed to disagree with the government to some extent.
In 1977, Alzaga joined the Union of the Democratic Centre. This was a group of political parties that worked together for elections. He was part of the Christian Democratic Party within this alliance. Alzaga was one of the people who felt the Union of the Democratic Centre needed to change its approach to politics.
In July 1982, he left the Christian Democratic Party. He then started his own political group, the People's Democratic Party. He led this party until May 1987, when he stepped down. Javier Rupérez took over as the new leader of the People's Democratic Party after him.
