Đorđe Genčić (born November 16, 1861 – died October 19, 1938) was an important Serbian and Yugoslav businessman and politician. He held several key roles, including being the Mayor of Niš from 1894 to 1899. He also served as the Minister of Internal Affairs (like a chief of police and public safety) from 1899 to 1900. Later, in 1903, he became the Minister of National Economy, dealing with the country's finances and trade. He was also a leader in a big political event known as the May Coup, which led to a change in the ruling family of Serbia, ending the time of the Obrenović dynasty.

Đorđe Genčić was born in 1861 in a village called Veliki Izvor, close to Zaječar. His family was quite wealthy. He went to high school in Zaječar and then in Belgrade, the capital city.

His Education and Early Career

After finishing high school, Đorđe traveled to Vienna, a major city in Austria. There, he studied economics, which is about how money, trade, and businesses work. Later, he received an invitation from Mikhail Chernyayev to go to Russia. In Russia, he studied military sciences, learning about army strategies and leadership.

After several years of training, Đorđe Genčić became an officer in the Russian guard. He served in the Russian Army and was promoted to the rank of captain. This experience gave him valuable skills in leadership and organization, which would later help him in his political career back in Serbia.
