Her Journey as a Nurse
Early Career and Education
Amelia Tuʻipulotu first trained to become a nurse. She gained experience working in both Australia and Tonga. She was very dedicated to her studies.
She received a special scholarship from Australia. This allowed her to attend the University of Sydney. In 2012, she made history. She became the first person from Tonga to earn a PhD in Nursing.
After finishing her advanced studies, she returned to Tonga. She worked for Tonga's Ministry of Health. She became the Matron of the Nursing Department. This was at Vaiola Hospital in Tonga. A matron is a senior nurse who manages a nursing department.
Becoming a Minister
Role in Government
In October 2019, Amelia Tuʻipulotu was given a big responsibility. She was chosen to be the Minister of Health. This was part of the government led by Prime Minister Pohiva Tuʻiʻonetoa.
It was quite special because she was the only minister. She was not a member of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga. This means she was not an elected politician.
Changes in Leadership
She served as Minister of Health until December 2021. At that time, a new Prime Minister, Siaosi Sovaleni, took office. He appointed Saia Piukala as the new Minister of Health. Saia Piukala had held the position before her.
Working with the World Health Organization
International Recognition
Amelia Tuʻipulotu's expertise was recognized internationally. In May 2020, she was elected to a position. She became a Rapporteur on the executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is a global group that works on health issues.
A rapporteur helps to summarize discussions and decisions. This role showed her importance in global health.
Chief Nursing Officer
In December 2022, she received another major appointment. The World Health Organization named her as their Chief Nursing Officer. This is a very important global role. It means she helps guide nursing practices and policies worldwide.

- She was made a Member of the Order of the Crown of Tonga. This honor was given to her on July 6, 2021.
