How A&W Cream Soda Is Advertised
Snoopy and Woodstock Campaign
In 1991, A&W had a very popular summer ad campaign. They put pictures of Snoopy and Woodstock on their soda cans. Snoopy and Woodstock are famous characters from the Peanuts Gang comic strips by Charles M. Schulz. On the cans, Snoopy was shown doing fun activities like playing baseball, having a cookout, surfing, and riding a bike. These special cans were a big hit with people who bought the soda. You could find these images on both regular and Diet A&W Cream Soda cans.
Polar Bear Commercials
In 1992, A&W, a top root beer company, made their own commercial using polar bears. This was after Coca-Cola had used polar bears in their ads since 1922. A&W's commercial showed a real polar bear next to a mechanical one. The mechanical bear was even ice-skating in a fancy skirt!
The commercial used these polar bears to show the difference between regular A&W Cream Soda and sparkling A&W Cream Soda. The real bear, yawning, represented the regular cream soda. The ice-skating bear stood for the sparkling version. Using polar bears was a clever way to attract many different people to the drink.
Partnering with Baywatch
In 1992, Pepsi-Cola International and A&W Brands Inc. teamed up. They signed an agreement to sell more A&W bottled drinks in Asia. They hoped to sell a lot of A&W soft drinks in Asia over the next ten years. Their goal was to make A&W as well-known there as Pepsi.
In 1994, A&W spent $7 million on advertising. They worked with the popular TV show Baywatch to help sell more of their product. Baywatch was one of the most-watched TV shows at the time, so it was a great chance for A&W. Their ads appeared in four episodes of Baywatch. The show featured A&W as a sponsor for a boogie board test. The winner of the contest on the show even received a year's supply of A&W soda!
New Slogans and Ads
A&W Cream Soda also spent money on ads that celebrated "a little sparkle in a vanilla world." A new ad campaign from New York showed everyday people, from kids to grandparents. They all described how much they enjoyed A&W. This campaign was different from A&W's usual funny ads. It used old-fashioned, sepia-toned pictures. Their new slogan was simple: "authentic."
Besides using Snoopy, polar bears, and Baywatch, A&W Cream Soda has had other commercials. Famous actors like Joe Isuzu and William Sanderson appeared in some of these ads.
