Abdelsalam Atalla al-Majali (born 18 February 1925 – died 3 January 2023) was an important doctor and politician from Jordan. He served as the Prime Minister of Jordan two times. The Prime Minister is the head of the government in Jordan.
Early Life and Learning
Abdelsalam al-Majali was born in a place called Al-Karak in Jordan. This was on 18 February 1925. He studied medicine at Syrian University in Damascus. He finished his medical degree there in 1949.
Later, he went to London in England. In 1953, he earned a special diploma. This diploma was for studying the ear, nose, and throat (Laryngology and Otology). He got it from the Royal College of Physicians. In 1960, he became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. This is a special honor for surgeons. In 1974, he received an honorary doctorate from Hacettepe University. This means he was given a special award for his achievements.
His Work and Career
From 1960 to 1969, Majali was in charge of medical services for the Jordanian Armed Forces. This means he oversaw health care for the military.
He also worked as a government minister. He was the Minister of Health from 1969 to 1971. He also served as the Minister of Education from 1976 to 1979. He was also a minister for prime ministerial affairs.
Majali was the president of the University of Jordan for many years. He held this role from 1971 to 1976 and again from 1980 to 1989. In 1973, he became a professor of medicine at the university. Later, in the late 1980s, he became an advisor to King Hussein.
He became Prime Minister of Jordan for the first time in May 1993. He served until January 1995. During this time, he signed an important agreement. It was called the 1994 Israel–Jordan peace treaty. This treaty helped bring peace between Jordan and Israel. When he became Prime Minister, he was also the foreign minister. He resigned from this role in January 1995.
Abdelsalam al-Majali became Prime Minister again from 1997 to 1998. After this, he was chosen to be a member of the Jordanian senate. The senate is part of the country's law-making body.
In 2003, Majali joined a group called the Anglo-Arab Organisation. By 2013, he was the chairman of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences. This group works to promote science in the Islamic world.
Personal Life and Passing
Abdelsalam al-Majali passed away on 3 January 2023. He was 97 years old.
