Adalbert of Babenberg (born around 854 – died September 9, 906) was an important member of the Babenberg family. This was a powerful family in the old Frankish kingdom.

Adalbert was the son of Henry I of Babenberg. His mother was either Ingeltrude or Judith of Friuli. Adalbert's sister, Hedwiga, married a powerful leader named Otto I of Saxony.

Adalbert was a key figure in the Babenberg feud. This was a big rivalry between his family, the Babenbergs, and another strong family called the Conradines.

What Was the Babenberg Feud?

The Babenberg feud was a long-standing conflict. It was a power struggle between two important noble families. These families were the Babenbergs and the Conradines. They both wanted more land and influence in the Duchy of Franconia. This rivalry led to many clashes and battles.

Adalbert's Last Battle

In February 906, Count Adalbert led his army. They attacked the Conradine family near a place called Fritzlar. During this fight, Conrad the Elder, a leader of the Conradines, was killed.

After the battle, Adalbert went back to his castle, Theres. However, the king's army soon surrounded the castle. They began to lay siege to it.

The Promise and Its Outcome

The king sent an important messenger to Adalbert. This messenger was Archbishop Hatto I of Mainz. Hatto I promised Adalbert that he would be safe if he left the castle.

But when Adalbert came out, he was captured. He was found guilty and then put to death. After this event, the Babenberg family lost many of their important positions. They also lost their lands in the Duchy of Franconia.
