Agnes (in Aragonese, Agnés) was a queen of Aragon. She was the second wife of Ramiro I of Aragon, who was the first king of Aragon. People believe she might have been the daughter of either William VI, Duke of Aquitaine or William VII, Duke of Aquitaine. It's also thought she might have married again after Ramiro's death, possibly to Peter I, Count of Savoy.

Who Was Queen Agnes?

Agnes became queen after Ramiro I's first wife, Ermesinda of Bigorre, passed away. Agnes and King Ramiro I were married for about ten years. Ramiro I died on May 8, 1063. It is believed that Agnes lived longer than her husband. They did not have any children together.

Her Family Background

The name Agnes was common in the family of the Dukes of Aquitaine. King Ramiro's family often arranged marriages with this ducal family. Because of this, historians think Queen Agnes also came from the Aquitaine family. However, her exact place in their family tree is not fully known. Both William VI and William VII have been suggested as her possible father.

A Possible Second Marriage

Later, a woman named "Agnes, daughter of William of Poitou" married Peter I, Count of Savoy. This Agnes was also thought to be the daughter of William VII. It is possible that this was the same Agnes who was the widowed Queen of Aragon. If this is true, it would mean Agnes married King Ramiro at a very young age.
