Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I, also known as Chaacal and Akul Anab I, was an important ruler of the ancient Palenque city. This city was part of the amazing Maya civilization. He was born on July 5, 465, and ruled from June 5, 501, until his death on November 29, 524.

Early Life and Rule

Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I is special because he is the earliest ruler of Palenque whose birth, start of rule, and death dates are all known for sure. He became the leader, or ajaw, of Palenque in 501 AD. He ruled for over 23 years until he passed away.

Family Connections

Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I might have been the younger brother of the ruler before him, Bʼutz Aj Sak Chiik. This means he likely came from a powerful family in Palenque.

Interestingly, a much later and very famous ruler named Pacal the Great mentioned Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I many times in his official writings. Pacal ruled Palenque about a century after Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I. Historians believe Pacal saw Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I as a very important person in history, or perhaps even an ancestor. This shows how important Ahkal Moʼ Nahb I was to the city's story.
