Akikan! (アキカン!, meaning Empty Can!) is a Japanese novel series. It is about special drink cans that come to life and fight. The story was created by Riku Ranjō. The pictures in the books were drawn by Hiro Suzuhira, who is also known for her art in Shuffle!.

The first Akikan! novel was released on May 24, 2007. By April 24, 2009, eight books had been published by Shueisha under their Super Dash Bunko label. In 2008, a project began to turn the books into an anime TV show.

The goal of the project is to see if humans and Akikan can live together. The fights help decide which type of can is stronger.

The battles are often exciting and full of action. They test the Akikan's powers and their friendships. Kakeru tries to help Melon and the other Akikan understand their world and their purpose.

Main Characters

  • Kakeru Daichi: He is the main human character. Kakeru is a high school student who accidentally brings an Akikan to life. He tries to help the Akikan understand human feelings.
  • Melon: She is a melon soda Akikan. Melon is the first Akikan Kakeru meets. She is energetic and sometimes a bit clumsy. Her powers are related to carbonation.
  • Eru: She is a sports drink Akikan. Eru is often calm and serious. She is a strong fighter and helps guide Melon.
  • Budge: She is a grape juice Akikan. Budge is a rival to Melon. She is proud and often challenges Melon to battles.

Books and Anime

The Akikan! story first appeared as a series of light novels. These books were very popular in Japan. Because of their success, the story was later made into an anime television series. The anime helped bring the world of Akikan! to even more fans around the world. The anime series was produced by Brain's Base.
