Al Jemailiya (Arabic: الجميلية, romanized: Al Jumaylīyah) is a town in the country of Qatar. It is located in the Al-Shahaniya area. This town used to be its own municipality, but it joined Al Rayyan Municipality in 2004. Later, in 2014, it became part of the new Al-Shahaniya Municipality. Al Jemailiya is about 30 kilometers northwest of the main highway. It is being developed as a "District Centre" to help serve the communities nearby, like Al Suwaihliya.

What's in a Name?

The name Al Jemailiya comes from an Arabic word, 'jamila'. This word means 'beauty'. The town was given this name because it had more plants and greenery than other places around it.

You might see the name spelled in different ways, such as Al Jumaliyah, Lijmiliya, Al Gummaylah, or Al Jumaylīyah.

A Look Back in Time

In 1908, a writer named J.G. Lorimer wrote about "Jimalīyah" in his book, Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf. He described it as a place where nomadic people stayed. He noted that the people there got good water from a deep well.

During the 1900s, Al Jemailiya was a fall camp for the Al Naim tribe. They would bring their animals here to graze. In 1980, the government built 60 new houses in Al Jemailiya. This was part of a plan to provide homes for people living in rural areas.

In 1983–84, Al Jemailiya was part of a big project to improve sewage systems in Qatar's rural towns. This project cost a lot of money.

Al Jemailiya became part of Al-Shahaniya Municipality when it was created in 2014. At that time, there were about 75 families living in the town.

Where is Al Jemailiya?

Al Jemailiya is located in the northwest part of Qatar. The village of Al Qa'iya is to its northeast. This area is part of Qatar's central plain. It has different types of land, including hills and flat areas called rawdas (depressions). This makes it different from the flatter areas to the north and east. Some of the highest points in this part of Qatar are southeast of Al Jemailiya. There are hills here that are about 41 to 49 meters above sea level.

The town is actually made up of two smaller villages. They grew around the well of Al Jemailiya. You can travel between these two parts using Al Jemailiya Road and Lebsayyer Road. The two villages are:

  • Al Jemailiya Al Naeem (25°38′06″N 51°04′54″E / 25.634878°N 51.081674°E / 25.634878; 51.081674): This is the northern part. It was named after the Na'im tribe.
  • Al Jemailiya Al Shahwan (25°37′12″N 51°04′57″E / 25.619924°N 51.082517°E / 25.619924; 51.082517): This is the southern and main part. It was named after the Shahwan tribe.

Before 2004, Al Jemailiya was its own municipality. It included other towns like Al Utouriya, Umm Bab, Al Nasraniya, and Dukhan.

When it was a municipality, it shared borders with these other municipalities:

  • Al Ghuwariyah to the north
  • Al Khawr to the northeast
  • Umm Salal to the east
  • Ar Rayyan to the southeast
  • Jariyan al Batnah to the south

In 2004, Al Jemailiya Municipality joined with Al Rayyan Municipality.

Places to Visit

Old Mosques

There are several old mosques in Al Jemailiya that were built in the mid-1900s. Many people moved to the capital city of Doha over the years, so most of these mosques are now empty.

Bin Duham Mosque was built in 1942. It has two entrances, one on the north and one on the south. Its minaret (the tower where calls to prayer are made) is shaped like a barrel. The roof of the prayer areas was made from woven reed mats covered with mud and straw.

Future Plans for Al Jemailiya

The Qatar National Master Plan (QNMP) is a big plan for how Qatar will grow. Al Jemailiya has been chosen as a "District Centre." This means it will be developed to serve the communities around it.

The plan for Al Jemailiya focuses on building more public services and mixed-use buildings. Some ideas include opening a special shopping area and a farmers' market. New buildings planned include a civil defense center, a health care center with emergency services, and a larger youth center.
