A Famous Diner's Story

How It All Began

The diner is named after Al McDermott. He started his food business way back in 1910. He used a horse-drawn wagon to sell food. He served workers at the Fall River mills. Later, McDermott opened several diners. This particular diner opened in 1953. It was not always in the same spot. It moved a few times before finding its current home.

Moving and Reopening

Al Mac's Diner closed in July 2012. This was because of tough economic times. But it did not stay closed for long! After a lot of cleaning and repairs, the diner reopened. This happened in early 2013. It had new owners and new chefs. In 2019, the Dunse family sold the diner. A local businessman, Cliff Ponte, and his family bought it. They have worked hard to make the diner even better.

Where Politicians Stop

Al Mac's is a very popular place. Many politicians like to visit it. They stop by when they are campaigning. They also visit when they are not campaigning. Famous visitors include former Governor Deval Patrick. Senate President William Bulger also stopped by. Former Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley visited too. The late Senator Ted Kennedy was a frequent guest. He visited the diner many times. This was during his long time as a U.S. Senator. Martha Coakley even visited Al Mac's on Election Day in 2010. Her visit was shown on major news channels. This shows how well-known the diner is.
