The Algiers Expedition of 1516 was a failed military mission. It was an attempt by the Spanish Empire and the Sheikh of Ténès to take control of Algiers. At the time, Algiers was ruled by the Regency of Algiers.
Hayreddin Barbarossa had recently taken power in Algiers. The Spanish and the Sheikh of Ténès wanted to remove Barbarossa. They hoped to replace him with the son of the previous ruler.
The Spanish forces were quite large. They had between 10,000 and 15,000 soldiers. An additional 10,000 men from Ténès joined them. In contrast, Barbarossa's forces were much smaller, with only about 1,500 men.
In 1516, the Spanish ships sailed towards Algiers. However, a big storm hit their fleet while they were at sea. Many ships were destroyed. When the surviving soldiers finally reached Algiers, Barbarossa's smaller army easily defeated them.
The Spanish suffered heavy losses. About 3,000 of their soldiers were killed or wounded. Another 400 were captured. In total, around 8,000 Spanish men were lost. The forces defending Algiers had very few casualties. This expedition was a clear victory for Algiers.
