Almeda, Houston facts for kids
Almeda is a neighborhood in Southwest Houston, Texas. It's about 11 miles (18 km) from Downtown Houston. This area used to be a small, separate town. Almeda is located near Texas State Highway 288 and a railroad track.

History of Almeda
The Almeda area started in the early 1880s. Dr. Willis King helped develop it. The community was named after his daughter, Almeda King.
Almeda was a trading center for farming and wood. It was located along the International-Great Northern Railroad. In 1893, Almeda had 50 people and got its own post office. By 1914, the population grew to 200 people. It had two general stores and a lumber company.
The number of people in Almeda changed over the years.
- In 1925, there were 80 residents.
- By the 1930s, Almeda had four businesses.
- In 1948, 125 people lived there.
- Around 1953, the population grew to 1,750 residents.
- The post office closed in 1959.
In the 1960s, Almeda had 40 buildings. About 1,200 people lived there in 1962. The area got its first sewer system in 1963. By the 1980s, Almeda had a school, three churches, and some houses. It was still a rural area in 1998.

Almeda is part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). This district manages the public schools in the area.

Learning Programs
In 1998, Almeda Elementary School used special reading programs. For English classes, they used "Success For All." For Spanish-English classes, they used "Exito Para Todos." Many parents also took English classes to improve their skills.
History of Almeda Schools
The Almeda School District started in 1893. At first, students learned in a barn. They even used haystacks as desks! A one-room school building opened in 1894. The first permanent school in Almeda opened in 1901. In 1905, Almeda's school had one teacher and 31 students.
In 1936, the Almeda area became part of HISD. A new Almeda Elementary School opened in 1981. The current Almeda campus opened in February 2011.
Public Libraries
The Houston Public Library has the Vinson Neighborhood Library. It is located at 3100 West Fuqua Street. The original library building had problems like leaks. In 2009, the library moved to a new location.
Fun Parks and Recreation
The City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department manages Almeda Park. It also runs the Almeda Community Center. You can find them at 14201 Almeda School Road. The community center has a playground for kids to enjoy.
