Altuğ Tanrıverdi Çinici: Designing Great Buildings

Altuğ Tanrıverdi Çinici is known for her creative ideas and designs. She has helped shape many famous places in Turkey.

Early Life and Education

Altuğ Tanrıverdi was born in Istanbul in 1935. She loved architecture and decided to study it at a top university. She earned her degree from the Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture in 1959. This education prepared her for a successful career in designing buildings.

Working Together: The Çinici Architectural Office

After finishing her studies, Altuğ Tanrıverdi joined forces with her colleague and husband, Behruz Çinici. They were a strong team. In 1963, they officially renamed their company Çinici Architects. They believed in working closely on all their projects.

Major Projects and Creative Ideas

Altuğ Çinici and her husband worked on many important buildings. Two of their most famous projects are:

  • The public relations building for the Turkish Parliament Quarter.
  • The Middle East Technical University (METU) Campus.

Designing the METU Campus

The METU Campus project was a very big deal. Altuğ and Behruz Çinici won first place in a competition to design it. They had a special way of working. Instead of forcing their design onto the land, they spent a lot of time visiting the site. They wanted their buildings to fit perfectly with the natural landscape. This was different from many other architects at the time. Their approach made the METU campus unique and beautiful.

Awards and Recognition

After the METU campus was built, Çinici Architects continued to design many state buildings and schools. Their hard work and creative designs earned them many awards, both in Turkey and around the world. Some of these awards include:

  • The Simavi Foundation Award (1985)
  • The Is Bank Award (1994)
  • The Aga Khan Award for the Mosque of the Grand National Assembly (1995)
  • The Architect Sinan Award (2004)

Preserving Their Work

The designs and plans from Çinici Architects are very important. Their collection of work, called an archive, is being moved to SALT (institution). This means that their amazing architectural history will be kept safe for future generations to study and enjoy.
