What Does Amr el-Leithy Do?
Amr el-Leithy has had a long and interesting career in media.
Early Career in TV
Before becoming a TV presenter, he was a top manager for MBC, a private Arab TV channel in London, starting in 1991. In 2001, he began hosting and preparing a weekly TV show called "Ekhterak" on Egyptian State TV. This show was a political documentary, sometimes looking back at important world events. It was voted "Best Viewed" three times!
He also hosted other political talk shows on private channels. One was called "Moagha" (which means "Confrontation") from 2006 to 2008.
Radio Work
Amr el-Leithy also worked in radio. He prepared and narrated a weekly radio show on Egyptian State Radio's Middle East Broadcasting Channel for three years, from 2006 to 2009.
Helping People with "Wahed Mn Elnass"
In 2009, he started a very important program called "Wahed Mn Elnass" (meaning "One from the Public"). This show aired on Dream television channel. It focused on problems faced by people in rural areas and those who are struggling. The goal was to use media to help people and make sure their voices were heard by authorities.
Because of this program and his efforts to help poor and rural people, he won the UNESCO prize in 2010. This award is given for great work in developing communication. He received it in Paris in March 2010.
Other Important Roles
Amr el-Leithy is also the main editor and CEO of a weekly Egyptian newspaper called Elkhamis, which started in 1996. He teaches at the Higher Institute of Art Criticism and the International Academy of Media Science.
Today, he is a council member for the Culture and Tourism committee in the Egyptian Parliament. He is also a member of the Supreme Council of the Cairo Film Festival. Amr el-Leithy is involved in many important projects that help people.
Goodwill Ambassador
He is a Goodwill Ambassador for blood donation for the World Health Organization. This means he helps encourage people to donate blood. In 2015, he was also named a Goodwill Ambassador by a Dubai-based group for his work in social development through media.
Helping Through NGOs
He is a member of several non-government organizations (NGOs). He leads the "Nahdet Misr" society and helped start the Egyptian Food Bank in 2001.
In 2010, he launched his own NGO called "One from the Public." This organization works to carry out the goals of his TV program. It helps people in need and works with public figures and business people.
