How Amy's Ice Creams Started
Amy Simmons began Amy's Ice Creams in 1984. Before that, when she was studying in Boston, she worked at another ice cream shop called Steve's Ice Cream. When that company was sold, Amy decided to open her own ice cream business.
Amy and her business partner, Scott Shaw, chose Austin, Texas, for their first shop. They signed a lease for a store on Guadalupe Street in Austin. Since then, Amy has opened many more locations. Most of these are in Austin, but there are also two shops in Houston and one in San Antonio.
The first Amy's Ice Creams in Houston used to be located at The Rice Hotel. In 2009, Amy Simmons, the owner, said she did not plan to open many new stores quickly. The company reported earning $9 million in 2017.
