André Lespagnol (born July 26, 1943 – died September 13, 2020) was a French politician and a professor. He was a history expert who taught in Canada and France. He became the President of the University of Rennes 2. Later, he served as a top education official in different regions of France. He also helped lead the Regional Council of Brittany.

André Lespagnol's Early Life and Education
André Lespagnol went to high school in La Baule-Escoublac and Saint-Nazaire. He then studied history at the University of Nantes and the University of Rennes. In 1965, he earned a special teaching degree called an agrégation in history. This allowed him to teach at a high level.
He started teaching at Lycée Ambroise-Paré in Laval. After that, he worked as a research assistant in Canada at the Université de Montréal. He stayed there until 1970.
Becoming a Professor and University President
In 1970, André Lespagnol returned to France. He became an assistant at the new University of Rennes 2. He worked his way up, becoming an assistant professor in 1978. In 1984, he became a lecturer. Finally, in 1990, he became a full professor of history. This happened after he finished his important doctoral research.
In 1991, Lespagnol was chosen to be the President of the University of Rennes 2. During his time as president, the university grew a lot. For example, the Harp Campus opened in 1993. A new research center for social sciences was also created. The university also made an agreement with the French National Centre for Scientific Research in 1995. Jean Brihault took over as president after Lespagnol in 1996.
Later Career as an Education Leader
After his time at Rennes 2, Lespagnol took on new roles. On November 25, 1998, he became the Rector of the Academy of Reims. A Rector is a high-ranking education official in charge of schools and universities in a region.
He worked on many important projects there. These included improving schools in special priority areas. He also helped reform high schools and organize staff movements. He worked to keep small middle schools open in rural areas. He also helped create agreements between the Ministry of Education and the French Government.
André Lespagnol passed away on September 13, 2020, when he was 77 years old.
