Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Anita Schöbel (born 1969) is a German mathematician. She is known for her work in making things run smoothly, especially for public transport like buses and trains. She helps figure out the best places for things to be and how to make timetables work perfectly. She is a professor at the University of Kaiserslautern. She also leads a research group there and is a director at a special math institute called the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics [de]. She is also the president of the German Operations Research Society.

What She Studied and Her Jobs

Anita Schöbel studied mathematics and economics at the University of Kaiserslautern. She earned her first degree in mathematics in 1994. In 1998, she finished her doctorate degree. Her special project for her doctorate was about finding the best places for lines and flat surfaces.

She continued working at Kaiserslautern as a researcher. She worked in the Traffic Department at the Institute of Industrial Mathematics. In 1999, she moved to the math department. In 2003, she completed another important step in her studies, which allowed her to become a professor. Her project for this was about making public transport better for customers.

In 2004, she became a professor at the University of Göttingen. Later, in 2019, she returned to the University of Kaiserslautern. There, she became a professor of mathematics and a director at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics.

Books She Wrote

Anita Schöbel has written several books about her research. In 1999, she published her doctorate project as a book called Locating Lines and Hyperplanes: Theory and Algorithms.

She also wrote another book in 2006. This book was called Optimization in Public Transportation: Stop Location, Delay Management and Tariff Zone Design in a Public Transportation Network. It included ideas from her work on making public transport better for people.
