Aodh Buí Mac Cruitín (also known as Hugh MacCurtin) was an important Irish poet, teacher, and soldier who lived from 1680 to 1755. He was known for his writings and his work to preserve Irish history and language.
About Aodh Buí Mac Cruitín
Aodh Buí Mac Cruitín came from a family of bards in a region of Ireland called Thomond. Bards were special poets and storytellers who kept history and traditions alive through their art. Other famous members of his family included Gilla Duibin Mac Cruitín, a musician, and poets Aindrias Mac Cruitín and Seamus Mac Cruitín.
Aodh Buí spent about ten years living in Dublin. There, he worked with a famous writer named Jonathan Swift. They worked together on old Irish writings to help create a history of Ireland. He also spent another ten years living in Europe, mainly in cities like Louvain and Paris.
While in a place called Flanders, he wrote and published a book about Irish grammar. This book helped people learn how to speak and write the Irish language correctly. For a short time, he even joined a group of soldiers called Lord Clare's regiment of the Irish Brigade.
In 1732, while in Paris, he published an English-Irish dictionary. This dictionary helped people translate between English and Irish. It also included a poem written by him. This poem is special because it's one of the very few poems published in the Irish language during the 1700s.
Aodh Buí Mac Cruitín returned to Ireland in 1738. He continued his work as a teacher, first in Limerick and then in his home county of Clare.
His Writings
Aodh Buí Mac Cruitín wrote a book called A Brief Discourse in Vindication of the Antiquity of Ireland. This book explored the long history of Ireland. It talked about events, both real and imagined, from ancient lands like Scythia all the way up to the Norman Invasion. The Norman Invasion was a big event when people from Normandy came to Ireland.
