History

Aranjuez was a settlement in Costa Rica. It was founded in 1568 by the Governor Pero Afán de Ribera y Gómez. A governor is like a leader or manager of a region or state.

The settlement of Aranjuez was located near the Aranjuez River. It was also close to the Pacific Ocean. A pier, which is like a small dock for boats, was built nearby. This pier was called Ribera port.

Aranjuez was not a populated place for very long. In 1574, the acting governor, Alonso Anguciana de Gamboa, ordered everyone to leave. He moved the people to a new town he founded called Espiritu Santo. This meant Aranjuez became an empty place.

What Was Aranjuez?

Aranjuez was an early settlement in Costa Rica. It was started by a Spanish governor. This was during the time when Spain was exploring and settling new lands.

Where Was Aranjuez Located?

Aranjuez was built on the banks of the Aranjuez River. This river flows into the Pacific Ocean. Being near the ocean was important for trade and travel by sea. The Ribera port helped connect Aranjuez to other places.

Why Did Aranjuez Disappear?

Aranjuez was only active for about six years. The decision to move its people was made by a new governor. This was likely done to create a stronger, more central town. Espiritu Santo became the new important settlement in the area.
