The Story of Arthur's Teacher Trouble
The book starts on the first day of school. Arthur and his friends meet their new teacher, Mr. Ratburn. He gives them lots of homework right away! This makes them feel a bit worried.
Soon after, the principal, Mr. Haney, makes an exciting announcement. There will be a big "Spellathon" competition in a few weeks. Mr. Ratburn tells his class to study hard for a test. This test will decide who gets to represent their class in the Spellathon.
Arthur and his smart friend, The Brain, are chosen. They get long lists of words to study. They work very hard to learn them all.
Finally, the day of the Spellathon arrives. Students from different classes compete. One by one, the representatives are eliminated. Arthur is the last one left from his class. He spells the word "Preparation" correctly and wins the trophy!
At the end, Mr. Ratburn surprises everyone. He announces that he will be teaching Kindergarten next. This news makes D.W., Arthur's little sister, very unhappy.
Other Versions of the Story
The Computer Game
The book was turned into a fun computer game in 1992. A company called Living Books made it. Later, in 2012, it even became a smartphone app.
This was the first of five Arthur books to become a computer game. It was also the second game released in the Living Books series. Unlike the TV show, the game kept the whole story together.
Television Episodes
The story was also adapted into two episodes for the Arthur TV series. These episodes were called "Arthur and the Real Mr. Ratburn" and "Arthur's Spelling Trubble." They first aired together on October 8, 1996.
When the episode "Arthur and the Real Mr. Ratburn" was released on VHS tapes, its title card was changed. It became "Arthur's Teacher Trouble" to match the original book.
