Attman's Delicatessen is a well-known Jewish deli in Maryland. It has locations in the cities of Baltimore and Potomac. A deli is a type of restaurant. It serves many traditional foods. These foods are part of Ashkenazi Jewish and Jewish American cooking. Some popular items include corned beef, pastrami, and Reuben sandwiches. They also offer knishes, latkes, pickles, and whitefish salad.

A Taste of History

Attman's Delicatessen first opened its doors in 1915. It was located on Lombard Street in East Baltimore. This area was once called "Corned Beef Row." It was a busy place. Many Jewish delis were found there. It was the heart of Jewish Baltimore.

The Founder's Story

The deli was started by Harry Attman. He was a Jewish immigrant. Harry came from a village near Kyiv. He moved to Baltimore in 1920. Before that, he learned about the grocery business. He learned it in Providence, Rhode Island. Harry's wife, Ida, was from Poland.

The Attman family was religious. They kept a special kitchen at home. This kitchen followed kosher rules. Kosher means food is prepared in a certain way. It follows Jewish dietary laws. However, the deli itself was never kosher. This was because some of its meats, like corned beef, did not follow these rules. The deli also stayed open on Shabbat. Shabbat is a day of rest in Judaism.

New Leadership and Locations

Harry Attman passed away in 1968. His son, Seymour, then took over the business. By the 1970s, many different people visited Attman's Delicatessen. Most customers were no longer Jewish.

Attman's Delicatessen also expanded. A new location opened in Montgomery County. This was in 2013. It was first in Cabin John. Later, in 2020, it moved to Potomac.
