The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is a special part of the Government of the United Kingdom. It helps the Attorney General and their helper, the Solicitor General. These two people are known as the Law officers of the Crown in England and Wales. Sometimes, people call the AGO the "Legal Secretariat to the Law Officers."
The work and spending of the Attorney General's Office are checked by a group called the Justice Select Committee. This makes sure everything is done correctly.
What the Attorney General's Office Does
The AGO is one of the smallest government departments in the UK. It has about 40 staff members. It works closely with other legal groups. These include the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
The main job of the AGO is to give legal advice and support. This advice goes to the Law Officers. The Law Officers then give legal advice to the government. The AGO also works with other departments. These include the Ministry of Justice and the Home Office. They help create new rules for the justice system.
