Discovering the Aynesworth–Wright House

Who Built This Historic Home?

The Aynesworth–Wright House was built around 1852 by a man named Isaiah Hezekiah Aynesworth. He was a very interesting person! Isaiah was a Baptist preacher, which means he led church services. He was also a skilled cabinet maker, someone who builds beautiful wooden furniture. He designed and built this house in a style called Greek Revival, which looks a bit like ancient Greek temples with its columns and grand feel.

What Did the House Look Like?

When it was first built, the house was located at 4507 East Avenue in Austin. It started as a simple two-room house. It had a special kind of hallway called an "enclosed dog-run." Imagine a covered walkway that connected the two main rooms. Later, more rooms were added to the back porch, making the house bigger.

The Wright Family Moves In

In 1855, just a few years after it was built, a doctor named Joseph Wright bought the house from Isaiah Aynesworth. Dr. Wright was not only a physician but also a surveyor, someone who measures land. He practiced medicine right near his home, in a small log building. The house stayed with the Wright family for many years.

Moving and Restoring the House

Over time, the Aynesworth–Wright House was moved from its original spot to its current location at Pioneer Farms. Moving an entire house is a huge job! After the move, the house was carefully restored. This means it was repaired and brought back to look like it did when it was first built. A group called Franklin Savings Association helped with this important restoration work.
