The black-and-gold tanager (Bangsia melanochlamys) is a beautiful bird known for its striking black and gold feathers. It belongs to the Thraupidae family, which includes many types of tanagers. This special bird is found only in Colombia, meaning it is endemic to that country.
What is the Black-and-gold Tanager?
This bird is quite small, but its bright colors make it stand out. It has a shiny black body with patches of bright golden-yellow, especially on its wings and belly. These colors help it blend in with the forest environment, but also make it easy to spot for birdwatchers.
Where Does It Live?
The black-and-gold tanager lives in specific places in Colombia. Its natural habitat is in subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. This means it prefers forests that are high up in the mountains, where it's often wet and misty. These forests provide the perfect home with plenty of trees for shelter and food.
Why Is It in Danger?
Sadly, the black-and-gold tanager is considered a Vulnerable species. This means its population is decreasing, and it could become endangered if we don't protect it. The biggest threat to this bird is habitat loss. People are clearing forests for farming, building, or other activities. When their forest homes disappear, these birds have nowhere to live or find food. Protecting these unique mountain forests is very important to help the black-and-gold tanager survive.
