Nepotian of Asturias facts for kids
Nepotian was a very short-term king of Asturias in the year 842. Before becoming king, he was a high-ranking official called the count of the palace under the previous king, Alfonso II of Asturias. Nepotian was related to King Alfonso II, but exactly how they were related and if he had the right to be king are things historians still discuss.
Some older writings say Nepotian was King Alfonso's brother-in-law. However, this doesn't quite fit with the dates, and there's no clear proof that Alfonso had a sister who married Nepotian. The oldest historical records simply say he was a "kinsman" or relative of Alfonso. There's also a theory that he might be the same Nepotian mentioned in a document from King Silo of Asturias's time. But if that were true, he would have been over 90 years old when he tried to become king, which seems unlikely.

Becoming King of Asturias
After King Alfonso II died, Nepotian quickly tried to take the throne. He was a powerful figure in the palace, which helped him make his move. However, his time as king was very brief.
The Battle for the Throne
In the same year, 842, another relative of King Alfonso, named Ramiro, challenged Nepotian. Ramiro was also a strong leader and believed he should be the next king.
The two men and their armies met in a battle known as the Battle of the Bridge of Cornellana. This fight happened near the Narcea river. Ramiro's forces defeated Nepotian's. After this defeat, Ramiro became the new king, known as Ramiro I.
