Bineshwar Brahma (born February 28, 1948 – died August 19, 2000) was an important teacher, poet, and writer from Assam, India. He was the president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, which is a special group for Bodo language and literature. He was born in a small village called Bhatarmari in Kokrajhar.

Early Life and Family

Bineshwar Brahma grew up in the village of Bhatarmari. His parents were Late Taramoni Brahma and Late Sanathi Brahma. He had several brothers and sisters. Later, he married Smt. Pushpa Rani Brahma. They had two children, Daniel Brahma and Sharmila Rani Brahma.

His School Days

Bineshwar Brahma started school in 1954 at Bhatarmari Primary School. He then went to Kokrajhar Higher Secondary School for middle and high school. While in high school, in 1965, he became a Bisarad in Hindi, which means he became very skilled in the Hindi language. For his college education, he studied at Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat. He earned his B.Sc. Degree there in 1972.

His Career Journey

Bineshwar Brahma began his working life as a Hindi teacher in 1968. He taught at Debargaon Venture High School. He also taught for a short time at Kokrajhar Vidyapith High School. In 1972, he worked as a Field Demonstrator for Assam Agro-Industry. Later, he became an Agronomist in 1978. An agronomist is someone who studies how to grow crops and improve farming. He also became a Deputy Manager of Quality Control. He was working as a Joint Manager when he passed away in 2000.

His Books and Poems

Bineshwar Brahma was a talented writer. He wrote many books and poems. Here are some of his works:

  • Aini Aroj - This was a book of his poems, published in 1988.
  • Bardwi Sikhla - Another collection of his poetry, released in 1997.
  • Angni Gami Bhatarmari - A prose work, which means it was written in regular sentences, published in 1998.
  • Xopun Aru Dithok - This was a novel written in the Assamese language, also from 1998.
  • Sima - A collection of his short stories.

Working for His Community

Bineshwar Brahma was a true social worker for the Bodo people. He was very active in student groups during his school and college days. He was the General Secretary of the Students Body at Kokrajhar Higher Secondary School. He also led the Students Union Body at Assam Agricultural University.

He cared deeply about the Bodo language and culture. He worked for the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, a group that promotes Bodo literature. He served as their General Secretary, then Vice-President, and finally as their Chairperson from 1996 to 2000. He believed the Bodo language should be written using the Devanagari script, which is used for Hindi. He worked hard to help bring peace between different groups in Assam and the Indian Government.

Remembering Bineshwar Brahma

Bineshwar Brahma passed away on August 19, 2000. To honor his contributions and memory, an engineering college in Kokrajhar was named after him. The Bineswar Brahma Engineering College was established in 2010.
