What is Blakley's Spineflower?
Blakley's spineflower is a small plant that grows straight up. It usually reaches a height of no more than 15 centimeters (about 6 inches). The plant has a yellowish-green color and is a bit hairy. It also has a few leaves at its base, which are about 2 centimeters long.
Where Does It Live?
This rare plant is found only in the Sierra Madre Mountains in Santa Barbara County, California. Scientists have only found it in eight specific places. Four of these places are located inside the Los Padres National Forest.
Its Home in California
Blakley's spineflower likes to grow on hillsides that face north. It prefers to live in areas with chaparral (a type of shrubland) and woodlands. These are special habitats found in California.
What Do Its Flowers Look Like?
The flowers of Blakley's spineflower grow in a cluster. Each tiny flower is surrounded by six hairy, leaf-like parts called bracts. These bracts have little pointy tips that can be straight or hooked. The actual flower is very small, only a few millimeters wide. It has white or pink petals, which are called tepals, and they have a cool, notched shape.
