Boerhavia intermedia is a type of spiderling plant. It is also known by its common name, five-wing spiderling. Some scientists think it might be a type of another common plant called Boerhavia erecta.
This plant grows in many places in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is an annual herb, meaning it lives for one year.
What It Looks Like
The five-wing spiderling can look a bit different from one plant to another. It usually grows in loose clumps. Its straight stems can reach about half a meter (about 20 inches) tall.
Its leaves are shaped like a spearhead and have wavy edges. The plant has branches with groups of tiny flowers, or sometimes single flowers. Each flower is pale pink and very small, only one or two millimeters wide.
After the flowers, tiny fruits appear in clusters. They are shaped like small clubs and have ridges. These fruits are less than 3 millimeters long.
Where It Grows
This is a tough plant! It can grow in dry, rocky places. It also grows in areas that have been disturbed, like roadsides. You can often see it as a common weed in these areas.
