Borrell, Count of Osona facts for kids
Borrell I was an important leader from a long time ago. He was the first count of three areas: Cerdanya, Urgell, and Osona. He became a count between the years 797 and 799. He stayed in charge until he died in 820. Borrell was a nobleman, which means he came from an important family. He was probably from a place called Cerdanya.
Becoming a Count
During Borrell's time, a powerful group called the Franks were expanding their lands. The Franks were led by a famous king named Charlemagne and his son, Louis the Pious. They were taking over parts of what is now Spain, which was then called the Marca Hispanica. This area was next to lands controlled by the Moors.
Around the year 798, the Franks took control of Urgell and Cerdanya. Borrell was chosen to be the count of these areas. A count was like a local ruler or governor.
Helping the Franks
Borrell was very active in helping the Franks expand their territory. In 799, he helped conquer Osona. He also played a big part in the successful attack on Barcelona in 801. Barcelona was a very important city.
Because of his help, Borrell might have been made count of Osona as a reward. He also joined in military trips to a city called Tortosa in 804 and 805.
What Happened Next?
Borrell I died in the year 820. After his death, his lands were divided. Osona was given to a count named Rampon. The areas of Urgell and Cerdanya were given to another count named Aznar Galíndez I.
