Branislav "Brana" Crnčević (born February 8, 1933 – died April 14, 2011) was a famous Serbian writer and also a politician. He wrote many different kinds of books and stories. He created novels, short stories, poems, and even TV shows. He also wrote special books for children.

Who Was Branislav Crnčević?

Branislav Crnčević, often called Brana, was a well-known writer from Serbia. He was born in Kovačica on February 8, 1933. He grew up in a town called Ruma. When he was a child, his father passed away. Because of this, Brana spent some of his childhood in orphanages and with foster families.

His Early Life and Education

Brana went to the University of Belgrade. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy there. After finishing school, he started his career in a different field. He first worked for a brewery in Novi Sad.

Soon after, he began working as a journalist. He wrote for newspapers like Jež and Duga. He also worked for a children's newspaper called Mali jež. Brana wrote columns for other popular magazines too, such as NIN and Politika.

Starting His Writing Career

While working as a journalist, Brana also started writing his own books. His very first book for children was called Bosonogi i nebo. This means "Barefoot and the Sky." He also published his first collection of aphorisms. Aphorisms are short, clever sayings that share a truth or observation. His first collection was titled Piši kao što ćutiš, which means "Write as you are silent."

Brana sometimes used different names for his writing. He was known as Vinon Rumski and Branislav BIP. He also helped write the script for a movie called The Harms Case in 1987.

A Life in Politics

Besides his writing, Brana Crnčević was also involved in politics. He was friends with Slobodan Milošević. In 1990, he became the president of an organization called Matica iseljenika Srbije. This organization helps Serbians living abroad.

He was a member of several political parties. He joined the Serb Democratic Party. Later, he joined the Serbian Radical Party. When that party split, he followed Tomislav Nikolić to the Serbian Progressive Party. In 1996, Brana was chosen to be a member of the Senate of Republika Srpska. He also received an important award called the Order of Njegoš.

Remembering Branislav Crnčević

Branislav Crnčević passed away on April 14, 2011. He had been ill for a long time. He was buried in the Belgrade New Cemetery. His resting place is in a special area called the Alley of Distinguished Citizens. He shares a plot with other famous people like Milutin Čolić and Momo Kapor.

To honor him, a cultural center in Ruma was named after him. In September 2016, a street in the Vračar area of Belgrade was also named in his memory.
