Bridal Veil Falls (Utah) facts for kids
Bridal Veil Falls is a beautiful waterfall in Utah, United States. It stands about 607 feet (185 meters) tall. You can find it at the south end of Provo Canyon, close to US189. It's known as a "double cataract" waterfall because the water flows down in two main sections.
Fun Facts from the Past
- The Old Tramway: In 1961, a special tramway was built here. It took people to the top of the falls! This small tram had six seats. It was the only way to reach the Eagle's Nest Lodge and restaurant. This restaurant was built on a cliff right at the top of the falls. People used to say it was the "world's steepest aerial tramway."
- The Heber Creeper Train: For many years, the falls were a popular stop for the Heber Creeper tourist train. This train stopped running past the falls in the late 1980s. The old train tracks were then turned into a fun trail for walking and biking. Today, you can visit the falls and a small park nearby called Bridal Veil Park. You can get there easily from U.S. Highway 189.
- Changes Over Time: In 1996, a big avalanche hit the area. It destroyed the building that held the tramway's machines and a gift shop. These were never rebuilt. Later, in 2008, a fire burned the restaurant building at the top of the tramway. Very little of it remains today.
- Safety First: In August 2008, the local sheriff's office asked the owners to remove the remaining tramway cable. This was to make sure no one tried to climb the rocky face of the waterfall using the old cable.
- Slippery Rocks: In October and November, the rocks around the falls can become very slippery. This is because the temperature changes quickly, creating thin layers of ice. It's important to be careful when hiking here, especially during these months.
- Recent Changes: Starting in April 2017, the last parts of the old tram and restaurant were removed from the site. In early 2023, another avalanche came down the waterfall route. This changed the look of the landscape and the plants around the falls.
