What is the British Tomato Growers' Association?
The BTGA is a special group that started in 1997. Its main goal is to support and represent people who grow tomatoes in the UK. They help farmers grow the best tomatoes possible.
Why is the BTGA important?
The UK doesn't grow all the tomatoes it needs. Only about 18% of the tomatoes eaten in the UK are grown there. This means most tomatoes come from other countries. The BTGA works to help British farmers grow more tomatoes.
The association represents over 90% of all tomato growers in the UK. That's about 850 different farms! By working together, they can share ideas and solve problems.
Who leads the BTGA?
The current leader of the BTGA is the Chairman, Nigel Bartle. He is also the manager of a very large tomato farm called Cornerways Nursery. This farm is in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. It has the biggest glasshouse for growing tomatoes in the whole UK!
When are British Tomatoes in Season?
British tomatoes are fresh and ready to eat for many months of the year. The main British Tomato Season runs from March all the way to October. This is when you'll find the freshest UK-grown tomatoes in shops.
British Tomato Week
Every year, the BTGA helps celebrate British tomatoes during an event called British Tomato Week. This special week usually happens in May. It's a time to celebrate the hard work of British tomato growers. It also helps people learn more about where their food comes from.
