Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars! is an exciting animated TV series from France and America. It's also known as Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Menace in Canada. The show was made by several companies, including Sunbow Productions and Continuity Comics. It first aired in 1991 in the United States. In the UK, it started in 1992 on the BBC.

The series is based on a popular comic book called Bucky O'Hare. It tells the story of a brave crew fighting against an evil empire.

What's the Story About?

The cartoon takes place in a special place called the "Aniverse." This is a parallel universe filled with different animal-like characters. The main hero is Bucky O'Hare, a green hare who captains a spaceship. His mission is to fight against the evil Toad Empire.

A human boy from Earth, named Willy DuWitt, accidentally travels to the Aniverse. He becomes the engineer for Bucky's ship, the Righteous Indignation. Together, Bucky and his crew try to save the Aniverse from the toads. The toads are led by a powerful computer program called KOMPLEX.

Meet the Main Characters

Bucky and his team are part of an organization called S.P.A.C.E. This stands for "Sentient Protoplasm Against Colonial Encroachment." They are the good guys fighting for freedom!

  • Bucky O'Hare: He's the main hero, a green hare and the captain of the Righteous Indignation. He's voiced by Jason Michas.
  • Jenny: She's the first mate and pilot. Jenny is a cat from the planet Aldebaran. She has secret magical and mind powers, like reading thoughts and healing. She keeps these powers hidden from most of the crew. Margot Pinvidic voices her.
  • Willy DuWitt: A young human boy from San Francisco. He becomes the ship's engineer after traveling to the Aniverse. He helps Bucky's crew fight the toads. Shane Meier is his voice actor.
  • Dead-Eye Duck: The ship's gunner. He's a four-armed duck who used to be a space pirate. He's quick to use his laser pistols. Unlike the comics, he has a Southern accent in the show. Scott McNeil voices him.
  • AFC Blinky: An advanced robot (Android First Class) with one eye. He often says "Calamity and Woe!" when there's trouble. Sam Vincent provides his voice.
  • Bruiser: He's a Betelgeusian Berserker Baboon. Bruiser joins Bucky's team as a space marine. He's very strong and scares the toads easily. He's voiced by Dale Wilson.

The Evil Toad Empire

The villains of the story are the Toads, who want to take over the Aniverse.

  • KOMPLEX: The leader of the Toad Empire. KOMPLEX is a computer program that took control of the toad society. Its name means "Feed me" in the toad language. Long John Baldry is the voice of KOMPLEX.
  • Toad Air Marshall: One of KOMPLEX's top commanders. He's a toad covered in warts and medals. He's voiced by Jay Brazeau.
  • Toad Borg: A large, purple cyborg who is KOMPLEX's second-in-command. Richard Newman voices him.
  • Storm Toads: These are the many toad soldiers who do all the fighting for the Empire.

Key Differences from the Comics

While the cartoon uses many ideas from the original comic book, there are some changes:

  • The parallel universe is called the "Aniverse."
  • Willy DuWitt can travel between Earth and the Aniverse more easily.
  • A character named Bruce is sent to another dimension instead of being defeated.
  • The Toad Empire follows KOMPLEX willingly, they are not controlled by mind-bending.
  • Deadeye Duck has a Southern accent, not a Scottish one.
  • Jenny's special powers are revealed to Willy.
  • The cartoon explores more of the Aniverse and has a main story arc. This includes Bucky's home planet, Warren, being taken over and then rescued.

Episode Highlights

The series has 13 episodes, each with an exciting adventure. The story begins with Bucky and his crew discovering that the Toad Empire has captured his home planet, Warren. They must travel there to investigate. Along the way, Willy DuWitt joins their team.

The crew faces many challenges, like fighting the Toads' new "Climate Converter" weapon. This device changes the weather on planets. They also meet new allies and enemies. The series ends with a big battle to save Jenny and free Bucky's home planet from the Toads.
