Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars! is an exciting animated TV show. It is also known as Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Menace in Canada. The series was made by several companies, including Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions. It first aired in 1991 in the United States. In the UK, it started in 1992 on the BBC. The show is based on a popular comic book called Bucky O'Hare.

About Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars

This animated series takes place in a different universe. This universe is called the "Aniverse." The story is about a brave crew fighting against the evil Toad Empire.

How the TV Show is Different from the Comics

The TV show uses many ideas from the original comic book. However, some things were changed for the cartoon:

  • The parallel universe is named the "Aniverse."
  • A character named Willy DuWitt can travel easily between Earth and the Aniverse. In the comics, he was stuck there.
  • Bruce, another character, goes to a different dimension. In the comics, he was killed.
  • The Toad Empire follows their leader, KOMPLEX, willingly. In the comics, they were brainwashed.
  • Deadeye, a duck character, has a Southern accent. In the comics, he had a Scottish accent.
  • A very powerful mouse from the comics does not appear in the show.
  • Jenny, a cat character, shows her special mind powers to Willy DuWitt.

The cartoon explored more of the Aniverse. It followed a main story arc. Bucky's home planet, Warren, was taken over by the toads. The crew worked to rescue it by the end of the season.

Meet the Characters

Bucky and his friends are part of an organization called S.P.A.C.E. This stands for Sentient Protoplasm Against Colonial Encroachment. They fight to protect planets from being taken over.

The Righteous Indignation Crew

  • Bucky O'Hare – He is a green hare and the captain of a S.P.A.C.E. spaceship. His ship is called The Righteous Indignation. Jason Michas provides his voice.
  • Jenny – She is the first mate and pilot of the ship. Jenny is a cat from the planet Aldebaran. Females of her species have secret magical and mind powers. These powers include reading minds, moving her spirit outside her body, shooting energy, and healing. She keeps these powers a secret from most of the crew. She has a special connection with Willy. Margot Pinvidic is her voice actress.
  • Bruce – He is Bruiser's older brother. Bruce is a Betelgeusian Berserker Baboon. He used to be the engineer on The Righteous Indignation. He disappeared into another dimension during a battle. Dale Wilson voices him.
  • Willy DuWitt – He is a human boy from San Francisco and the ship's engineer. Willy enters the Aniverse through a special portal. He takes Bruce's place as engineer. Later, Willy gets stuck in the Aniverse. Bucky and his crew keep Willy a secret from the S.P.A.C.E. organization and the Toads. Shane Meier is his voice actor.
  • Dead-Eye Duck – He is a four-armed duck and the ship's gunner. Dead-Eye used to be a space pirate. He is missing one eye. He is impatient and likes to use his four laser pistols to solve problems. Unlike the comics, he has an American accent. Scott McNeil voices him.
  • AFC Blinky – This is an advanced robot, an AFC (Android First Class). Blinky has only one eye. He often says "Calamity and Woe!" when there are problems. Sam Khouth provides his voice.

The Evil Toad Empire

These are the main bad guys in the show:

  • KOMPLEX – This is the computer program that rules the Toad Empire. It was made to manage the toad culture but took over and made them into a military force. In the toad language, its name means 'Feed me'. Long John Baldry voices KOMPLEX.
  • Toad Air Marshall – He is one of KOMPLEX's top commanders. He has many medals on his uniform and a face full of warts. Jay Brazeau is his voice actor.
  • Toad Borg – This is a large, purple cyborg. He is KOMPLEX's second-in-command. Richard Newman voices him.
  • Storm Toads – These are the regular toad soldiers. They don't think for themselves and are the main fighting force for the Empire.

New Characters in the Animated Series

Most characters are from both the comic and the cartoon. Here are some new ones made just for the cartoon:

  • Bruiser – He is Bruce's younger brother. Bruiser is also a Betelgeusian Berserker Baboon. He joins Bucky's team as a space marine. Like all berserker baboons, he scares the toads and loves to fight them. He is kind but not very smart. He looks up to Willy. Dale Wilson voices him.
  • Commander Dogstar – He is Bucky's friend and an ally. Dogstar is the captain of another ship called The Indefatigable. Garry Chalk is his voice actor.
  • Mimi LaFloo – She is a fox who was captured by the toads. Bucky rescues her. Mimi later becomes the captain of her own mammal spaceship, The Screaming Mimi. Margot Pinvidic voices her.
  • Frix and Frax – These are the Air Marshal's two clumsy assistants. Terry Klassen and Scott McNeil voice them.
  • Al Negator – He is a bipedal crocodile spy and mercenary. The Air Marshal often hires him. He speaks and dresses like people from the cajun culture. Garry Chalk voices him.
